The Franke’s Youth Theater production of The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical invites 5th-9th grade students to join a Stage Combat 101 workshop. The Lightning Thief will feature stage combat throughout and the goal learning safe techniques for combat on stage. Some objectives of the workshop for students includes building an understanding of grounding and balance and establishing a safe distance during fight scenes.
Participation in this workshop does not guarantee a role in the production, but will provide added learning in preparation for students planning to audition. 5th-9th grade students may participate in this workshop even if they do NOT plan to audition.
Date: Saturday, March 16, 2024
11-1pm for students in 5th and 6th grades
1:30pm–3:30pm for students in 7th-9th grades
Cost: $25
What to expect: The first portion of the workshops will be learning the basics of Stage Combat. The remaining time will be learning a fight combination that will be part of auditions for The Lightning Thief.
The goal: Building an understanding of grounding oneself for balance and establishing distance for safety reasons. Also, students will get a better understanding of their coordination and have a more comfortable stage presence.
What to wear: Dress comfortably. No sandals or crocs. You will be moving, so loose clothing and any form of athletic shoe/sneaker. NO JEANS are allowed, and socks must be worn. Also, please bring a long sleeved shirt or a hoodie/sweater and plenty of water.

All workshops take place at The Franke Center for the Arts, 214 E. Mansion Street in Marshall.
A maximum of 20 students per session will be accepted.

About the instructor
Joshua Cornea
Joshua graduated from UM – Flint Theatre & Dance with a BFA in Performance. He studied under Bill Irwin and Janet Haley. He then went on to receive his certification in stage combat studying with Dueling Arts International and The Society of American Fight Directors. He has choreographed productions performed at community theatres, the University of Michigan-Flint, and Albion College. Just recently, Joshua has taught the Introduction to Stage Combat class at Oakland University. His goal is to have all his students and actors gain a greater sense of confidence in their own physical capabilities and stage presence, and to have fun doing it!
